Where masculine and feminine energies collide

At the start of February, I had the opportunity to work with drag artist Brooklyn, who goes by the name Bratty in drag, in a home studio shoot. They had a really clear concept in their mind. They wanted to create a dress made of ribbons, and told me that their drag character played into dark and gothic vibes. I knew that the best way to showcase what they had in mind would be to shoot their look against a dark background, illuminated by a focused and controlled studio light (I used a Neewer softbox light to achieve what I had in mind).

The result was some pretty striking images. I love in the shots above and below how masculine energies and feminine energies collide, and I love the androgynous nature of these shots.

The shot below was one of my favourites from the entire shoot. A fellow photographer commented that they felt that it is representative of the current experience of LGBTQ+ people in the country - a desire and having the courage to be truly yourself, but feeling a little frightened and vulnerable when doing so.

These are some of my favourite shots I've ever taken. So much so that I've entered a few of them for a portrait photography award.
